Hunt for the best UK manufacturer targets the East Midlands MAS East Midlands

EAST MIDLANDS manufacturers have got less than two months to get their entries in for the 2007 Manufacturing Excellence (MX) Awards. MAS EM is encouraging firms across the region to take part in the Awards initiative that will see one worthy UK company go on to win the coveted Best Manufacturer crown.

MAS EM’s practice leader Simon Leonard said: “This is the UK’s premier manufacturing prize and is an excellent opportunity for manufacturers to demonstrate their capabilities and pit their wits against the best in the industry.”

Last year, MAS-assisted BGB Innovation (pictured receiving their trophy) from Grantham won the MX People Effectiveness Award.

Every firm that enters will receive a free business ‘MOT’ worth up to £20,000 which offers top tips to companies on how to improve performance, taking size and resources into consideration.

Participating companies are then entitled to follow this up with a free on-site ‘health check’ visit of up to five days from MAS EM in order to get the full benefit of the outcomes of the MOT benchmark report. MAS EM can help firms implement changes that will transform their shortcomings into assets.

The competition is being run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in partnership with MAS nationally to promote and protect the heritage of the UK manufacturing industry and share best practice.

IMechE president Alec Osborn MBE said: “Having worked with some of the leading UK companies in my time as an engineer, a project like this is fundamental to protecting the manufacturing assets. Every firm that enters is entitled to the MOT benchmark report, compiled by a panel of manufacturing experts, and we have also set up a mentoring scheme to help firms through the whole process.”

Deadline for entries is 2nd March. Finalists for the 11 categories will be invited to a glittering awards ceremony on 13th June at the Marriott Hotel in London where the winners will be announced.

All entrants are offered a mentor to guide them through the application process, making entry swift and easy and helping firms gain the most from their MX application.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) first established its Manufacturing Excellence Awards scheme in 1981. In 1999 the process underwent a major review when the Self Assessment Audit and Benchmark Report were introduced. The IMechE now has around 78,000 members in 120 countries. It represents mechanical engineers involved in a diversity of fields such as the automotive, rail, aerospace, medical, power and construction industries to name a few.
